More than a million lose power as storm blows through California ...
Yosemite National Park rangers and sheriff's deputies combed the Sierra foothills and mountain snow camps Friday afternoon searching for a Clovis man and his two children, said Clovis police spokeswoman Janet Stoll-Lee. John Hopper, 64, a volunteer chaplain with the Clovis police, left town Thursday morning with his 15-year-old twins, Matt and Sarah, to "go play in the snow," Stoll-Lee said. The family didn't give any indication of where they were heading, and law enforcers heard they were missing only when Hopper's ex-wife reported they hadn't returned late Thursday, she said. Travelers' flight plans were put on hold when airlines delayed or canceled flights in Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area. The state Legislature in Sacramento closed offices and sent employees home early.
Scientist jailed for setting lethal mantrap
A FORMER Government scientist who booby-trapped his home to deter burglars has been jailed for 18 months. Because a judge said he considered Nigel Cockburn to be a danger, an extended licence period of 18 months was imposed. He told the 53-year-old "eccentric", who worked for the Ministry of Defence for 36 years: "The nature of your former occupation makes you potentially very dangerous. You are an expert in counter-terrorism and have considerable experience in dealing with explosive devices." Maidstone Crown Court heard that Cockburn invented a lethal mantrap which injured an Army explosives expert when he opened the door of a rundown shed and a metal device packed with 4in nails swung at his head. Captain Iain Swan, of the Royal Logistics Corps, suffered wounds to his arm as he instinctively raised it to protect head.
Waldoboro Town Manager, First Selectman Surprise Town With ...
The chair at the end of the Waldoboro selectmen's table was noticeably vacant Tuesday night as close to 100 people filed into the meeting room at the town office. Most selectmen's meetings find fewer than half a dozen citizens in attendance, and most find Town Manager Lee Smith in his seat at the end of the table. Smith was not at the regularly scheduled select board meeting, but employment lawyer Clare Payne was in the audience as First Selectman Carleton Johnson announced that Smith had tendered his resignation, effective Jan. 1. No reason was given. Payne was on hand as the legal counsel who helped draft the agreement, apparently in the executive session that commenced earlier that afternoon. The resignation marks the end of Smith's 26-year career as Town Manager.

Will speeding fine blunder cost £20m?
MILLIONS of pounds of fines could have to be refunded after a landmark ruling found several speed limits on Hamp-shire's roads are not legally enforceable. Experts say a judge's decision yesterday opens the door to thousands of motorists to claim their money back, but that could be just the tip of the iceberg. District Judge Philip Gillibrand yesterday dismissed the last of 14 test cases against motorists allegedly caught speeding along the A27 in and around Fareham. He ruled that simple errors in the way signs were positioned meant the speed limits essentially had no backing in law. Legal experts who uncovered the failings say they have seen the same mistakes time and time again across the county, which they described as "a signing disaster zone".
Your guide to the Section III boys and girls basketball tournaments
Preaster, no doubt, would like to go out a winner, and winning a third straight Section III title would be quite a sendoff for the Proctor senior, considering he was the only starter returning from last year's championship team. West Canada Valley's Indians, meanwhile, are 20-0 and seeded No. 1 in Class C-2 for the second straight year. And you can bet senior starters Jeff Yaworski, Rip McKerrow, Dan DeKalb and Ben Maxwell are determined to make all of the Kuyahoora Valley forget how last season ended - with a double-overtime loss to Frankfort-Schuyler in the Class C-2 final. Cooperstown (C-1) and Richfield Springs (D-1) are the other two are teams seeded first in the playoffs. The tournament is "open" to any team, regardless of regular-season record, but several area schools chose not to participate this year, including Camden in Class A, Ilion and Canastota in Class B, and Poland, Owen D.
