FPD warns of burglaries

Fortuna Police are reminding residents to double check the locks on their homes and cars after a number of burglaries were reported last week, according to a statement released yesterday.

Suspects gained access through unlocked residences, or used garage door openers from unlocked cars to get into homes. One unlocked car was stolen from the area. The department is asking residents to close and lock windows, doors and cars, and keep garage door openers out of view from outside the car. To report suspicious activity in a neighborhood, call the Fortuna Police Department at 725-7550. .

Garage-kept in Colorado

When I moved West 10 years ago, there was one thing I never dreamed of seeing: a garage in my backyard. A mountain lion, sure, John Elway and a real cowboy. But not a garage.

I once had a garage, back East, in college. It was handy for storing junk, my weights set and a trailered boat. But the move to Colorado meant leaving the V-hull behind. "Where would we use a boat in Colorado?" my wife asked years ago. (I couldn't answer through my sobs as my prized fishing vessel rode off hitched to another man's truck.)

But my wife's garage pitch was clever: "You can use the garage to hold your new boat." It would be joined by our only car. But I shivered. I saw myself losing open space and gardening room in our modest backyard.

I enjoy parking on a Western street. I can commune with nature by scraping ice off the car in winter, or sliding into a 500-degree driver's seat in our ever-longer summers.

Hitch 'em up, move 'em out: Trail ride signals return of the rodeo

On Friday, the streets around Houston's Memorial Park resembled something out of a John Wayne movie as 13 trail rides with some 4,000 riders converged on the city for Go Texan Day and the precursor to the start of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

As is tradition, all of the trail rides converge on Memorial Park before the rodeo parade, which starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

It's an annual celebration of all things Texas that had its beginnings 56 years ago.

Unlikely allies fight same-sex marriage in Iowa

Because Iowa doesn't have a residency requirement, Hurley believes same-sex couples from out of state will marry here, then sue their home states for recognition.

The court likely will not rule until 2009. But Ratliff and Hurley say it's imprudent to wait.

So do 45 of Iowa's 100 state representatives, who are co-sponsoring legislation on a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. When surveyed on how they would vote, the Iowa House of Representatives was split 50-50. This will be a critical week because legislation concerning the constitutional amendment must make it out of committee by Thursday or the bill won't be voted on this session.

Ratliff and Hurley have been two of the loudest voices in this legislative and cultural fight, organizing rallies against same-sex marriage and lobbying the Legislature to let Iowans vote on its legality.
