Mom recalls shielding child from 'huge dogs'

A lot is being lost here from the original story. Rolo left a scratch on the victim, if he was a vicious dog he would have taken a huge chunk out of her. I can understand her being afraid, but to have a dog destroyed over a scratch is sad. Put the owner in training, put the victim in counseling, socialize the dog better and get on with life.

61% believe country is in grips of recession, poll finds

Wall Street is unsettled and as a result, people's nest eggs are not what they once were.

In fact, that was the top economic worry in the AP-Ipsos poll. Fifty-nine percent said they were worried "a lot" or "some" about seeing the value of stocks and retirement investments drop.

"I really dread opening my (financial) statements," Sims said.

By one rough rule of thumb, a recession occurs when there are two consecutive quarters — six straight months — when the economy shrinks. That did not happen in the last recession, though. The economy contracted in the first quarter of 2001, turned positive in the second quarter, shrank in the third quarter and turned up again in the final quarter of that year.

The National Bureau of Economic Research, the recognized arbiters for dating recessions, uses a more complicated formula.

Hallett Projects Continued Acquisition Strategy

Hallett said that Warren Byrd, executive vice president of corporate development, has been extremely busy of late in negotiating these deals throughout the U.S. and Canada. Byrd is on the road and working the phones to iron out additional acquisitions in strategic markets. "I would say we will have more announcements within the next 60 to 90 days," Hallett noted. "If we have five acquisitions now, I would hope that we will have 10 by the end of the year," he added. "We are growing our business and if an acquisition makes sense, we are going to get it done," Hallett continued. But ADESA is not focusing just on acquisition expansion. Hallett said it also is relocating operations in Kansas City, Dallas and Phoenix to brand-new, modern, technologically advanced facilities in those same metropolitan markets. Kansas City is first up.
