Infinti EX35 embodies the next wave in crossovers

The Pacific Coast Highway is one of the nation's most spectacular drives, curving gracefully along cliffs that drop precipitously toward rocky beaches laced with the foam of thunderous breakers.

Focusing on the road can be a challenge for visiting drivers, particularly when passing the multi-level manses of Malibu. Should you look up, down or straight ahead? Since this is not a divided highway, it's best to keep your eyes on the road as much as possible.

Driving south from Point Mugu, I happened across a head-on collision that crushed the fronts of both cars. Ambulances were en route. I have no idea whether the unfortunate drivers were tourists, but it was easy to see how the mishap could happen amid such awesome visual distraction.

Will 'Amnesty' Sink McCain?

The perennial controversy over what to call McCain's amnesty is silly. Every program in the world that has allowed illegal immigrants to stay has been called an "amnesty." McCain himself called it "amnesty" as recently as May 2003, when he told the Tucson Citizen "I think we can set up a program where amnesty is extended to a certain number of people who are eligible … Amnesty has to be an important part ..." But once the focus-group results were in, "amnesty" became a four-letter word. ...[snip]

Real Straight Talk would be to say "Sure, it's an amnesty, but we don't really have any choice" ...

P.S.: The McCain, post-focus-group argument is that it can't be "amnesty" if it has some requirements--e.g., to pay a fine, learn English, etc. But it turns out that Ronald Reagan's 1986 "comprehensive" reform, which he and everyone else called an "amnesty," had requirements too, including payment of fees.

Disabled girl turned away by bus driver

Ms Pickup, of Leith, said when she tried to board the bus from Ocean Terminal on Saturday there was a woman with a buggy taking up the wheelchair space. She claimed the driver did not ask the woman to fold up the pushchair, but simply said she would have to wait for the next bus.The helpdesk consultant said when she phoned to complain she was told the driver was not able to move people from the space. She now plans to write to the First Minister asking for the issue to be looked at."I was just so angry with the bus driver because of his attitude," she said. "I thought these spaces were meant to be for wheelchair users, and I can't see why the woman couldn't fold up the buggy so my daughter could get on the bus."All I keep thinking about is what if my daughter was an adult and travelling on her own and the bus driver told her she wasn't getting on.

Recovery Tough for Mo. City Council

He survived the shooting attack only after throwing chairs at Thornton to fend him off before police arrived.

"Connie Karr's death is all of our worst nightmare," Hessel said. "It is something that I live over and over."

Besides Karr, killed in the rampage were Officer William Biggs Jr., Officer Tom Ballman, Public Works Director Ken Yost and Councilman Michael H.T. Lynch.

Thornton had a long history of fighting with city officials over a litany of code violations, fines and citations.

The tiger kidnapping

A "tiger kidnapping" is the term given to the taking hostage of bank or security employees, or their families, to carry out a robbery, as happened at the Securitas depot in Tonbridge. It gets its name from the predatory nature of the crime.

Such kidnappings are growing and will increasingly involve "softer banking sector targets as well as cash-rich businesses", according to Control Risks, the security and business intelligence consultants.

In 2006, the latest year for statistics, there were 20 tiger kidnappings in the UK, up from seven in 2001, with many more aborted attempts left unrecorded, Control Risks said.

"As physical security has improved at the traditional heist targets such as major banks, criminals have focused on the human element," said James Lewry, a senior consultant at Control Risks.

In The Valley Of Elah

It's a fictionalised version of the story of Richard Davis, who was murdered with awful brutality near Fort Benning, Georgia, in 2003.

Before I amplify my praise, let me raise some doubts about the Hollywood peace train now getting up steam. A lot of films are now questioning the Iraq war - sort of. As usual, they are following American public opinion, rather than leading it. It's true that this is happening more quickly than it did after Vietnam; it's also true that the war in Iraq, depending on your source, is not yet won or lost, so none of these films is really prepared to call it an unjust, immoral or a pointless war - whatever the American opinion polls say.

That's hardly surprising but I don't think any film so far has even given a sense that most of the suffering is in Iraq, rather than the US.
